Hi harts004,

For help with checking the microphone on your AirPods, test switching the settings using the steps below found in the article here: Change the settings of your AirPods and AirPods Pro

"Set Microphone to left, right, or automatic

There's a microphone in each AirPod, so you can make phone calls and use Siri. By default, Microphone is set to Automatic, so that either of your AirPods can act as the microphone. If you're using only one AirPod, that AirPod will be the microphone.

You can also set Microphone to Always Left or Always Right. You can also set Microphone to Always Left or Always Right to always have either the right or the left AirPod use the microphone even if you remove it from your ear or put it in the case."

If the issue occurs when test with the left, right and automatic be sure the all steps for resetting your AirPods have been completed. The article you started from has the steps. How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro

You can also test cleaning your AirPods with these steps: How to clean your AirPods, AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and EarPods

Once clear record a voice memo to see if your voice is being heard clearly. If needed, use this article to view steps for recording a voice memo: Make a recording in Voice Memos on iPhone

If the issues remain after attempting all the steps, reach out to Apple directly to further assist.
