mic level audio is very low with a 10th Generation iPad with an Apple USB-C to headphone adapter

Hi People,

Have a new 10th gen iPad which needs to have a headphone socket to record audio and accept signals from a remote control for a teleprompter. Also purchased an Apple USB-C to headphone adapter but immediately noticed the audio from a headset microphone is so low as to be inaudible. the vendor for the teleprompter remote control have advised they have had no problems with the same setup. So has anyone else had similar issues? The adapter has been back to vendor for testing but they say no issues. Is it possible the iPad is faulty?

As described, your iPad is unlikely to be faulty. The Audio DAC is built-in to the headphone adapter - not the iPad.

Be aware that analog audio connections require appropriate impedance matching. Not all headsets or microphones will be ideal for connecting via the Apple Headphone adapter - this Adapter being optimised for Apple products. An impedance mismatch (typically the attached headphones/microphone have too-low an impedance) will often manifest as unexpectedly low-level audio - as described.

I've been able to delve deeper into this one with support from the vendor of the teleprompter remote.

When the USB-C connector was attached to the iPad and the remote attached, it became evident that the iPad was not recognising anything was attached. We found a non apple adaptor, and it recognised that a device was attached but the remote wouldn't control the teleprompter app.

We found a lightning to headphone adaptor and attached the lightning adaptor to a iPhone 12 and the remote worked.

So I think there is a major difference in the way the USB-C adaptor works compared to Lightning adaptors which is causing my problems.
