USB-C mics not recognized as audio input after iOS 26 update

USB C EXTERNAL MICROPHONE NOT CONNECTING

After updating to iOS 26, external USB-C microphones are powered and detected as USB accessories, but they are no longer recognized as audio input devices.

They DO NOT work in Camera or Voice Memos and iOS continues to use the built-in microphone instead.

This affects multiple external microphones and is not device-specific.

The same microphones work correctly on macOS and Android.

This microphones worked flawless before iOS 26 but now I have the same issue on multiple Iphones - it's not a hardware issue.

Is this a known issue or an intentional change in how iOS handles external USB-C audio input?

Thanks for the reply.

I already tried every thing you mentioned and other things.

The mics I used HollyLand Mk2 and A1 both worked on Iphones before the IOS 26 update.

Now I'm on IOS 26.2 the issue is there - tried on multiple Iphone 17 pro and Iphone 16 and it's the same problem after the update.

It's not a hardware thing, the microphones work on Mac and other Android phones...

I have contacted the manufacturer (HollyLand) and got this reply:

"Yes, we are aware of this issue with newer iOS versions. Unfortunately this is an issue with Apple's firmware and there has not yet been discovered a solution from our side.

For now the only recommendation is to try updating to other iOS versions and trying to make Apple aware of this issue.

You can try contacting their support to maybe get some recommendations.

We are working on trying to find a solution!"

Well, if it were a known issue affecting everyone then all of the audio universe would be up in arms and screaming at Apple from the mountaintop. They are not.

iOS 26 introduced a new security feature that blocks wired USB devices from connecting unless you the user okay it.

Start by restarting your iPhone to see if the issues clears. If not then...

Settings->Privacy & Security->Wired Accessories->set to Always Allow. See if the mic starts working. If you don’t see that setting make sure you are updated to iOS 26.2. That setting was greyed out in earlier version of iOS 26 because of a bug.

Also check Settings->Privacy & Security->Microphone->and make sure the app you want to use the mic on is enabled.

I got this advice from MS Copilot and it worked for me.

"Reset “Location & Privacy” (This Often Fixes Ghost Permission Bugs)

This does not erase your phone.

Go to: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Location & Privacy

Then:

  • Reconnect the Lark M2
  • Open recording app
  • Re‑grant mic permissions when prompted

This has fixed multiple USB mic failures after major iOS updates."

Solution found for iOS 26 + wired external microphone (Lightning)

If your external microphone stopped being recognized after updating to iOS 26, there is a new setting that fixes it.

Go to Settings > Haptics & Sound > Input (note: I’m using iOS in Portuguese, so the menu name may differ slightly in English) — but make sure your external microphone is already plugged in before opening this screen. With the accessory connected, it will appear as an option in the list and you can select it manually. Without the accessory plugged in first, only “iPhone Microphone” appears.

This works for wired microphones via Lightning on iPhone 15 Pro Max, iOS 26.3.1. The issue is that iOS 26 no longer selects external audio input automatically — you have to set it manually each time you switch microphones.

Hope this helps!

I'm having the same issue with my HollyLand Lark M2 mics that worked perfectly fine pre update. I have also updated my hollyland mics to 2024-03-25 V2.0.0.32, I tried the Haptic & sound settings change and the wired Accessories->set to Always Allow. Nothing has worked. I think im going to switch back to Andriod as I tested on my friends phone and it works just fine on an a brand new Andriod phone!

Well, if you go by this thread it’s you and two other people. I have not seen this reported in any of the major tech blogs. Again, if this were a widespread problem we’d be hearing about it all the time. I mean professionals are making movies using iPhones. If their mics didn’t work wouldn’t this be major news.

I’m having the same issue on a newer iPad Pro after iOS 26 update. I use an older type interface (Tascam iXZ) that used to plug in to a headphone jack on older devices, now i have to route it through a usbc—> headphone and all my vocals now sound like aliens underwater. Totally frustrating— because before the update I always got clear vocals using this setup. Please fix it Apple! I’ve never had trouble like this before using GarageBand. I need to record clear vocals for my work— and REALLY would like to not have to buy something new. Seems like it is a problem on your end, Apple. Pls fix it. Thanks.

My problem with my iPhone 17 pro
is that when I connect an adapter,
in this case a
Satechi Mobile XR Hub with Audio -
mobile USB-C adapter and
any microphone,
the recording to the device
is choppy and crackling.
On my iPad Air 5th gen,
if I connect this same adapter
with the same microphone
or to a PC,
I get good quality recording.
Could the problem with my phone
be hardware or software?
