I just bought an Apple pencil 1 for use on iPad Pro 1sr gen. The Pencil shows firmware 1.0 and is not updating

How can I make Pencil update its firmware from 1.0 to 2.6?

Has anyone been able to resolve this? I have a pencils on 02.48 and it won’t work with my iPad which is on 16.6. I’ve left it for hours connected but it just keeps dropping in and out of connectivity. It needs the new firmware but if the iPad can’t update it due to its firmware not being supported what can be done?

When I say I’ve left it for ours connected I mean plugged in to the iPad.

The Apple Pencil will automatically update its firmware, as needed, from the host device while the Pencil is connected to the host iPad for charging. There is no mechanism by which to manually trigger the update.

The Apple Pencil has not, to my knowledge, progressed beyond H/W version 1.0.0. The most recent Firmware version is v2.61.0.
