Apple Pencil 1 Firmware Upgrade

I have an Apple Pencil 1 on firmware version 02.48. It won’t pair with my iPad on iOS 16.6.

some research tells me that the old firmware is not compatible with the new iOS.

I’ve tried leaving the pencil in the iPad for hours but it doesn’t upgrade.

it pairs with Bluetooth but quickly drops out and if I go to Settings / General / About I see the pencil rapidly appear and disappear constantly, approx every second or two.

is there a way to upgrade the firmware without the iPad?

I am quite confident that this is the problem. Looks to me like Apple have made a fail here as it’s effectively bricking a product is there is no other way.

TIA for any help.

The quoted thread is well over three years old. You’ll note that there have been no additional firmware updates for the first generation Apple Pencil in this time.

If you believe the problem that you have to be an issue with iPadOS 16.6 and older Pencil firmware, then you need to bring this to Apple’s attention. Being a user-to-user technical forum, with the sole exception of the site Moderators, Apple neither monitors nor participates here. As such, if Apple is you target audience, you’ll need to communicate directly with Apple.

Option 1

Contact Apple Support using the Support link at top-right or bottom left of this page.

Option 2

You can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

Option 3

Consider visiting the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) where you can demonstrate the issue to Apple’s technicians - and your iPad and Pencil(s) can be tested:

Thanks for your reply. I started a new thread as the other had no definitive conclusion and I didn’t get a response.

the only other version I have is 16.5. This is the version the iPad I tested with was on beforehand. I am trying again though. It’s got 100% charge and I’ll leave it until the iPad gets down to single digits. Hopefully it will work.

Failing that, I can’t realistically be expected to go asking people for old iPads so am stuck with what to do. There should be a way to update, ideally the iPad should do it but I don’t see why Apple have released software that bricks a peripheral device in this way.

Did you fix it? I have the same issue. I just bought brand new Apple pencil 1st gen and pair it to my 1st gen iPad Pro. Widget says battery is 100% charged but the pencil can't work. I'm on iPadOS 16.7.2 and Apple Pencil is on firmware version 1.0.4. How to update this thing? I keep it plugged on the iPad but after few minutes the pencil disconnect itself from Bluetooth but still shown in Settings so it's still wired connected and recognised from the iPad. If I unplug and plug it again it connects again to Bluetooth for few minutes, but I'm not sure If I leave it like that whole night did firmware update will even happen if the pencil is disconnected from Bluetooth.

As described within the other thread in which you have participated, for the first generation Apple Pencil, the most recent Firmware version is v2.61.0:

There is no mechanism by which the Pencil can be manually forced to update its firmware. The Pencil should automatically update at some time when it is connected/paired with its host iPad - and is charging. If the Pencil has not paired with your iPad, the iPad will not be able to update the Pencil firmware.

Try connecting your Pencil to a different iPad - if you have one, an iPad that has not been updated to iPadOS 16.6.

Yours is the first and only complaint that I have seen that explicitly suggests that iPadOS 16.6 renders a Pencil unusable.

Unless you are able to test your Pencil, perhaps consider that your Pencil has actually developed a fault - which, by coincidence, has occurred around the time that you have updated your iPad.

If you don’t know anyone that has an older model iPad with which you can test your Pencil, you can seek assistance from the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store or Apple authorised Service Provider (AASP):

It’s unlikely the pencil, although I won’t rule it out. I have 3 in total. 2 have 02.48 fw and one has 02.61. The 2 on 48 have identical behaviour, meaning the pair for a second, drop out and then keep pairing and dropping every second or two.

im not saying 16.6 is the issue, just that somewhere along the road the iOS won’t support 02.48 to either use or update.

I found this thread….

No definitive answer though. I’m no expert but have spend enough time around technology to be leaning towards a compatibility issue between pencil firmware and iPad iOS.

I have a case with Apple. Will push further that this is a compatibility issue.
