Is there some app other than iPhoto that just shows as thumbprints all photos in a folder/directory and then allows you to make them full screen and click through each one?

Pick a folder of photographs in the Finder. Select the first one. Tap the space bar. Use the arrow keys to navigate through the list, left/right or up/down. It's called quick view.
yowee it worked even better than the Olympus Master software I used to use which is no longer compatible when I upgraded from High Sierra 10.13.6 to Big Sur 11.7
