How do I delete files on my Time Machine?

My Time Machine has stopped backing up my work and I have the following message - how do I delete files to make more room on the HDD. Shouldn't Time Machine do this automatically? Help please. M.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 11.6

Yes it will manage the backups.

If you have moved from an older macOS to a new macOS there can be an issue, or the drive is corrupt in some manner...

you can start a new drive as TM backup. Back up your Mac Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support

or

erase, reformat, initialize the old drive as new and start over with a new backup

If you value your user data

3-2-1 Backup Strategy: three copies of your data, two different methods, and one offsite.

More than one device, more than one backup methodology.

when seeking more space, I nominate the following possible boat-anchors:

• any MacOS installer sitting in /Applications folder or anywhere else. 6 GB or more instantly

• Anything in the downloads folder: They came from the internet, and can be re-downloaded easily.

• If you have Xcode installed, and do not use it every day, it is also enormous, and can be re-downloaded in a straightforward fashion.

Please read that alert message carefully: you need to create some free space on the source volume. To do that please read Free up storage space on your Mac - Apple Support.

You may want to consider renaming the backup disk to something meaningful. I suggest "backup disk" or something like that. As a name, "Edit Time Machine" is likely to result in your own confusion.
