Time Machine has been freeing up space all day

Time machine has been freeing up space literally all day. Can I just go onto the backup disk and move the old backups to the trash?

No. That is certain to result in corrupting the entire backup, making it useless.

Either let it finish, or erase the backup disk.

Why is Time Machine failing to do a backup because the drive is out of disk space? Why isn't it just deleting the oldest backups when it needs more space? I had to manually delete old backups from the drive. Clearly the following is a blatant lie! :)

Time machine back up as it says the disk is full backup My time machine backup is much bigger than my 2 internal hard disks. I've tried deleting lots of old backups but it fills up again very quickly. I've deleted the entire backup and in a few days the backup disk is full again. It's obvious that TM isn't a simple back up tool, but is doing something a bit fancier than that. But what?

That’s what I did. Reformatted the drive and started over. Thanks!
