Instead of getting letters I get the alternative “swipe” alphanumeric characters while typing on iPad

I’m finding the IPad keyboard extremely annoying. The number of times I’ve been typing but instead of getting letters I get the alternative “swipe” alphanumeric characters, and even the predictive text doesn’t correct. Is there any way of suppressing the swipe interaction.
