Siri says "I cannot find any Rock music in your library"

For several years, I've used Siri to control music stored on my iPhone. I have 10GB+ of MP3 files transferred to the device. I don't use Apple Music or streaming services in this case.

My usual voice command is "Hey Siri, shuffle rock music". And the usual reply had been "Now playing Rock music from your library". Then the correct genre of music plays, shuffled.

A few months ago this stopped working. I've tried other commands, like "Play music in genre Rock", etc. Nothing seems to work. If I simply pick up the phone, or use my Car Play device, I do in fact see 100s of Rock songs and can shuffle them manually.

Any advice on better commands to use, settings, etc.? TIA.

Hi wrenhunter,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. There are steps that may help resolve this issue with Siri. If you haven't tried yet, let's go ahead and restart your iPhone and test to see if Siri will play your rock music. Here's how to properly restart your iPhone:

How to restart your iPhone X, 11, 12, 13, or later
1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
The volume button is located on the left side of the device, and the side button is located on the right
2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.

3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo.

This is a step that may help and is outlined in this article: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

In addition, you'll want to ensure that your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS 16.5.1. This helps provide software improvements that may help with Siri. Here's how:

Update iPhone manually
At any time, you can check for and install software updates.
Go to Settings  > General > Software Update.
The screen shows the currently installed version of iOS and whether an update is available.
To turn off automatic updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.

Update using your computer
1. Connect iPhone and your computer with a cable.
2. Do one of the following:
* On a Mac (macOS 10.15 or later): In the Finder sidebar, select your iPhone, then click General at the top of the window.
* On a Mac (macOS 10.14 or earlier) or a Windows PC: Open the iTunes app, click the button resembling an iPhone near the top left of the iTunes window, then click Summary.
* Note: Use the latest version of iTunes. See the Apple Support article Update to the latest version of iTunes.
3. Click Check for Update.
4. To install an available update, click Update.

These steps are outlined here: Update iOS on iPhone - Apple Support

We look forward to hearing back from you with an update.

Kind regards.

Hi there wrenhunter,

Thanks for trying those steps and letting us know. To confirm, is Siri able to shuffle or play other music genres (if available) without any issues? Is Siri able to successfully follow other commands without any issues? We know you can manually shuffle rock music but want to see if Siri can shuffle other genres or do other commands without any issues.

Does turning off "Listen for Hey Siri" and enabling that help? If needed you can do that in Settings > Siri & Search. Disabling that and enabling it again may help reset that setting and help it work properly again. Let us know how that goes or if you've already tried that step.

Take care.
