How to know if my iPhone was hacked?

One of my contacts has received messages that claim to be me but obviously are not. Is my I-phone hacked or can you hack just the Messages? Not sure what I need to do to keep from happening to another contact; or if I can do anything? Do I need to change my Apple ID?

These sound like "phishing" messages from criminals. Perhaps from "lookalike" e-mail addresses that the crooks created specifically for use in impersonating you. E.g., by substituting the digit 1 for a lower-case L, the digit 0 for an upper-case O, or other things like that.

If you are worried about the possibility that your Apple ID was compromised, you may want to change it, and take the other security steps outlined in this support article:
