To many apps start after login - see screenshot

So, I close all that I am not using and clear the "Recent Items" list to empty (note that this screenshot represents the content of the Recent Items list right after the login). Once clearing this list, followed by logout and login again, this list is repopulated with items shown above - and all these apps are running.

It seems as if the recent items list has its own life and gets rebuilt after clearing (in the login process).

Anyone with an idea what is happening here?

The simultaneous existence of the "apple menu" -> recent items, system settings -> general -> open at login and the "reopen windows when logging back in "at apple menu -> logout item, seem inconsistent at least and possibly in conflict with each other at worst.

They are all independent items. Recent items are things used recently. Open at login are apps you want to open when you log into your account. Reopen Windows allows you to resume working on what you had open when you restarted or shut down. There is no consistency or conflict as they all perform different functions.

The table on the Login Items forms with the title "Allow in the Background" seems to enable/disable various LaunchDaemon .plist entries, without giving the support for removing them.

You uninstall the app that put them there using the uninstaller provided by the developer of the app.

I know that mucking with these may be dangerous for the health of my computer, but there is not much difference between disabling and deleting them IMHO

If you think you've found a bug then report it to Apple:

Product Feedback - Apple

But as this is not happening to other folks, and we aren't seeing a lot of the reports on here, then the issue is more likely to be either a glitch local to your machine or user action.

Yes, I am asking why all these apps do open on startup when most of them were not running at logout and when the recent list was cleared to empty.

Apps open at start up if they are told to. They can be told to in various ways as detailed above. If they're not being told to in one or other of those ways, then it is possible you have a glitchy plist file that's not being updated at each shut down. This is what I mean by a glitch local to your machine. Regrettably, I have no idea which file in your ~/Library/Preferences covers this, but someone else might.

Yes, your explanation is perfectly logical, if the behavior you described it actually taking place. However, if you check my first post in this thread, you will see that despite removing all items under the header Applications and then hitting restart I would get not only the items I removed but some apps that I did not use at the time I hit restart.

It seems that everyone who responded to my original post was thinking about how to explain to me what am I doing wrong, instead of believing that I am verifying with the community that I am actually dealing with a bug (I hate to report my mistakes as bugs

Thank you both, Yer_Man and Barney-15E I believe that the core issue lies in the behavior selected by the flag "reopen windows when logging back in" - as it is not well defined.

Reopen which windows - those that were open at logout or those that are listed in "recent items" or some other composition of these lists.

I will make a complete test using all these definitions in a logical way and report back here

This is precisely the core of my "bug preliminary report": I logged out and after login I expected to see "windows that were open when you click log out". I get at least 12 more windows, some of these I did not ever open (to the best of my recollection)

Now we reached the full circle - I will continue this with Apple support. Thank you for helping me to formulate this problem.
