Upgrading Late 2014 iMac 5K NVME SSD

Hi There,

Couple of months ago, the 128G SSD in my Late 2014 iMac died, I temporarily formatted my iMac and I have been using the extremely slow HDD only which is not really usable. Today I received the OWC NVME 2TB SSD which I am planning to install later today.

My question is whether I have to recreate the Fusion drive in Terminal which I know is a hassle, or can I install the OS on the SSD and use it as the main startup drive and use the HDD as a separate drive for additional storage only ?

Your help is highly appreciated.

iMac 27″, macOS 11.7

Ignoring the physical installation difficulties...

Yes. You can keep and use the two drives separately (ie install the OS onto the SSD and use the HDD for storage). In fact, that approach is probably better than attempting to fuse a high capacity 2TB SSD with a slow HDD.

First: upgrading your Mac is not officially supported.

But what I did, I removed the old HDD all toegether and installed the SSD on the place of the harddrive. It was not worth the hassle for me to keep the old HDD as it was really slow and unstable
