Hi Trudygriders,
Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand your son's location will not update unless you close Find My and open it again. We recommend making sure both your iPhone and your son's iPhone are updated to the latest version of iOS. Here's how to update if needed: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support.
"Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly
- Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
- Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
- Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
- If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
- Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do."
If the issue persists after updating, we recommend temporarily deleting any VPN apps installed on either phone. VPN apps can sometimes cause network issues. This article has the steps to delete the app and its configuration profile if needed: How to delete an app that has a configuration profile on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.
You could also try turning on Precise Location in Location Services to see if it helps. Here's how: Turn Location Services and GPS on or off on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.
We hope this helps.
Take care.
