Smart enough to stop Butt Dialing?

According to a number of articles including CNET, butt-dialing happens to everyone. Why? My phone is smart enough to recognize my face, knows it's got my attention and still continually asks, "Are you sure?". Not so with my butt - without questing it, my phone lets my butt dial my mother at 2am after I've been playing tequilla quarters for a couple of hours. The worst part is I have no control unless I remember to lock my phone in my less than sober state after using my phone to confirm I stayed at the bar until closing. It happens all the time when I'm sober too, confirm some bit of information on my phone, slide it back in my pocket and unbeknowst to me, someone is suddenly listening in on my conversation. This seems just as dangerous as many other action that require confirmation and a total invasion of my privacy.

Please give users the option to require a double-power-button-click or fingerprint or face recognition, attention or just voice confirmation that we really want to make the call. Quit sacraficing our privacy with butt dials, phones should be smarter than that.

You can avoid this by turning off Tap to wake in Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Tap to wake

No one here had anything to do with designing iPhone, its software or user interface.

I don't see how that's possible. If you've actually turned off tap to wake and raise to wake, your phone should not be doing anything when jostled in your pocket. You have may have a hardware issue with your phone and if so, a visit to the Apple Store Genius Bar would be a good idea.

There are a few people in my office who carry their phones in their pockets, who were getting unwanted wakes and taps and for all of them simply turning off Tap to Wake has completely resolved this for them.

Turning off Tap to Wake did not solve my issues; it was one of the solutions I had tried prior to the butt dial that prompted my post. Tap to Wake has nothing to do with sticking the phone in my pocket without sleeping it and it acting out in my pocket. The last butt dial wasn't even in my pocket; the phone was on my dresser playing Alarm Clock and I picked it up to check a notification on the way by, I heard a call ringing by the time I got to the bathroom door and raced back to stop it's deviant action. Luckily, my sister is smarter than me and charges her phone where she can't hear it at 1:00am.

I believe I have reduced butt-dialing by changing my usage. I determine whether I have the time and focus to secure my phone after use before I even reach for it. Although it has decreased my ability to detect fraudulant charges to my credit cards and increased the risk of missing important notifications, I've shut down any notifications that might prompt me to pull out my phone without giving it my full, undivided attention. Missing meetings and fun events does seem to have made my iPhone happier since I more time to spend with it; little does it know our relationship is over the day I meet a smartphone smart enough to know if it's me and not my pocket that's dialing.
