How do I connect six monitors to Studio Max?

M2 Studio Max

6 monitors are all 23 inch 1920x1080

3 have HDMI and DVI option

3 have only DVI.

Dock or splitter recommendations?

I understand Studio max only support 5.  These 6 monitors have always worked fine using my my older systemes that are now “obsolete.”

I spent the extra $400 to get 64GB of memory to ensure no lag when running these old HD monitrs.

I spent the extra $600 to get 2TB SSD for FCP editing but would like a few ports avail for extra storage.

I need 6 monitors but am I strange for not switching these 23” HD’s for same size 4Ks?

Thank you in advance.  I broke the bank to buy this cpu and Im afraid of buying a cheap adapter that might create a bottle neck in efficiency.

If you're not worried about keeping any ports open on your Mac now, you don't need any of these hubs or docks.

Back to your likely setup:

  • One USB-C to single-link DVI cable attached to each of your back-panel USB-C ports. Four cables total, to drive four monitors.
  • One { HDMI monitor or DVI monitor + HDMI-to-DVI adapter } attached to your back-panel HDMI port.
  • One DisplayLink-equipped hub/dock/adapter attached to one of your front-panel USB-C (USB) ports. One monitor attached to it, using an adapter, if necessary. This monitor will receive a second-class video signal, and its mere existence might cause DRM-infested programs to refuse to play DRMed video on any monitor. You would need a driver on your computer, and that would raise a possibility that future versions of macOS might break the driver.

The Sonnett DisplayLink adapter is $89.99 and the OWC one is $119.00.

Sonnett Technologies – DisplayLink Dual HDMI Adapter for M1/M2 Macs

Other World Computing – USB-C Dual HDMI 4K Display Adapter with DisplayLink

There are cheaper ones on Amazon – some of which use DisplayLink, others of which use competing technologies. For instance, here's one for $74.99 with two HDMI outputs (one limited to roughly single-link DVI resolution).

Amazon Marketplace – j5create USB-C to Dual HDMI Multi-Monitor Adapter with USB Type-A convertor | 4K + 2K |

Another that's $39.95 but that only has one video output, that tops out at 1920x1080 @ 60 Hz.

Thank you, that sounds hopeful

I have a couple of these adapters in a bag that I used to juggle around with.  I was never sure which ones were passive or active.  Do you know if that will make any difference?

The Studio Max should arrive next week.  Im going to order a few more cheapies to juggle in.  I noticed prices on these adapters are all over the place. Any sugestions?

Id like to have everything I need to fully test the 6 monitors within the 2 week return window in case I have to pay double for an Ultra that supports 8 instead of just 5 natively.

Anybody have any sugestions?

Wont I have to invest in a hub?

Thx for your help and patience w me.

"DisplayLink can work for you, but requires you to make some strong compromises."

By using a hub w display link to enable a monitor #6, would the risk of compromise be only with that monitor?  The only current concern would be potential lag in that particular monitor?

Everybody’s work flow and set up is different.  In the old photo I sent.  All 6 HD monitors had no lag (2010 Mac Pro w 48GB Ram).  I am only using FCP in bottom 2 monitors.  Personally, if my monitor #6 (at the top) is laggy, I will be ok with all the other monitors and system performance working optimally.

I have not seen any TB to DVI adapters. There are plenty of USB-C to DVI ones.

I think they are the same thing. In other words, I think those more common USB-C to DVI will also double as TB to DVI adapters.

The best one I see on eBay is made by Tripp Lite.

You can paste (u444-06n-dvibam) and it comes up

Its going to cost $38.95 (times) 6

I don't know if this adapter is active and I don't know if that matters.

When the Studio Max arrives I will try plugging in all 6.

One of my monitors has the HDMI port option so I will also utilize that.

My guess is no matter how much I juggle ports, adapters and cables-- only 5 monitors will come on.

Is that your guess also?

Any hub sugestions?

I think I will want an "active" hub

Grant opposes using 6th monitor but has made me feel more comfortable indicating it will potentially only be that 6th monitor via hub that may have lag.

As far as performance, I am glad I paid $400 extra for 64G ram for 6 monitors.

Do you think I'm on the right track?

Thank you for your help and patience with me.

Six 1080p TVs (“full HD”) aren’t all that much screen space by present-day standards, but a whole lot of desk space, power, cabling, and with bezels galore.

From Wikipedia, one 8K display is way more than all of what you have. Combined.

A pair of 6K displays will be a wall of display space, and with far simpler cabling.

As displays go, 4K TVs will work via HDMI, and are ~cheap. Biggest problem tends to be finding a display size that still fits on your desk, pun intended. But then six 1080p 23” displays need substantial mounting room, too.

Thank you for the Amazon link to those (U444-06N-DVI-AM) connectors.  They should provide the connection between my 6 monitors to this incoming Studio max. I believe they can be used for either TB or USB-c ports.  Im happy to see these adapters will give my 1080P monitors 60 Hz.

When Stuido Max and adapters arrive, I believe only 5 of the 6 monitors will come on.  Do you agree?  That’s when I will need to pull the lever on some 1:2 connector or hub to gain back my 6th monitor.

I was disappointed not to find any TB to DVI active disployPort adapters on the Sonnettech site or OWC links.  I only have one monitor that has the HDMI option.

Would you agree to get that 6th monitor and free up some Studio Max ports I should flip a coin and decide between those (2) OWC 249.99 Thunderbolt Docks?

Of those two OWC docs, would you have any preference?

Thank you for you’re guidance.  Anxious for this mad max to arrive.

Im sorry for my cont. confusion but I think im getting very close to understanding and ordering.

5 of my monitors only have DVI as an option.  Just one has HDMI as an option.  Naturally I will go out HDMI port on Studio to that HDMI monitor.

My question is now about the other 5 DVI cables to my 1920 monitors.  I don’t need sound.  Instead of 17.99 Amazon “display port” adapters, are you saying I could just find similar (non-display port) single link USB-C to DVI adapters for between $7-$10 and receive the same 1920 60 hz without to much performance drag?

6th monitor- I understand Im not going to find any USB-C to (2) DVI type adapters.

Do you think I can save the 249.99 (OWC) and somehow find something more affordable that has USB-C to 2 HDMI and maybe a few additional ports for future?  Then I can buy a separate HDMI to DVI to connect to my existing DVI cables to monitor?

Thank you in advance!

Thank you for those that have assisted me in picking products to keep my 6th monitor alive.  Especially Grant and SOCat.  First reply’s were very negative about breaking Apple’s “only 5 monitor standard” with all the possible negative outcomes.  Hard to digest knowing for over a decade my last 4 systems have broken all the Apple rules by connecting 6 monitors going all the way back to the G5.  I live near Cupertino and ordered Stuido Max last week.  I forgot it would take almost 2 weeks to get here because Apple stuff is all made by kids in Shenzeh China. When if finally arrives I will do lots of connector and port juggleing and using Activity Monitor to check for any stress.  Thankful I invested the extra 400 in 64G ram to support extra activity on extra monitors.  Thank you all.

Refreshing displays is not stressful, because it is done by a hardware automaton. Fetching a screenful of data every 1/60th second (16 milliseconds per screenful, with a typical 12,000 bytes pre screen for a 4K display, or 1.39 microseconds per byte, per display) is way too fast for the processor to do 'by hand'.

3840 * 2160 => 8,294,400 pixels.

Suppose that the computer is using 8-bit-per-channel color ("millions of colors") with no padding.

8,294,400 pixels * 3 bytes/pixel = 24,883,200 bytes worth of information per full screen.

Where does the 12,000 bytes per screen figure come from?

As a layman old school Apple user, I gather that the 6th fake screen that I have been currently running and look to run on this new system when it arrives should act how I have been used to on all my previous systems with a 6th screen.

I’m happy to hear the 6th screen wont tax the computer but understand it might be hard on the monitor.  I also took note that there could be a potential issue when upgrading the OS but I think that has to do with a DisplayLink software driver installed for a hub.

Im sorry for my incoherence but am I close to understanding this correctly? Thank you!

I thought my Studio Max was built locally in Cupertino.

I discovered its shipping from Sheitizuhan China so i think my adapters will arrive before it does.

You right, there no time to dawdle on ordering this hub from OWC to drive the 6th monitor and gain a few extra ports. Does this expensive item seem like it will do the trick?
