CDs won't play through the Mac

Out of the blue, post-upgrading to Ventura 13.4.1, my external CD player will not play a commercially manufactured CD through the iMac. It will copy the music from the CD, but seems no longer willing to play when I click on the "Play" arrow. The CD and its contents are showing up properly on the desktop and in iTunes. It just won't start.

Wondering if there's maybe a command from the Terminal that might be an alternative way to get it to play?

Thanks for any advice.
