I have 2tb iCloud that I want to share large files… when I drag large files from my external hard drive to iCloud the file stores on my MacBook and uses all my internal hard drive memory? How do I prevent this from happening?

iCloud is a synchronization service. Anything in iCloud is also on your Mac. You can elect to optimize storage on your Mac. That will offload less frequently accessed files when space is needed on your Mac.
