iphoto question

I was attempting to back up my iPhone SE, and clearing out hundreds of old photos on my MacBook pro,and suddenly the process stopped and now when I click on the little iPhoto in the dock, it says I cannot access my iphoto library. Any help?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Well, to tell you the truth, i was on Photos, and my laptop is 11+ years old and I had probably 2000+ pics I didn't need any longer. I opened photos off the dock and there was a list of "img.1554" or whatever, and I'd open them and if I didn't need them , id move it/them to the trash. I can't recall but I think I just pulled up Photos. Don't think I did it off a finder window. I transferred all my current photos off my iPhone onto this laptop, and they all transferred over, but there are a boatload of pics I was in the process of looking at and keeping/deleting and they have simply vanished. Any suggestions to recover?

thanks for your reply.
