iPhone stopped giving messages notifications - have tried all suggestions in Apple's help plus more.

My iphone stopped giving messages notifications after setting up a new macbook.

I have tried:

• all message notification settings - allow notification on, all three places to show them selected,

• all notification settings (all are on)

• focus is off (tried a custom focus that allows messages just to check. Nope.)

• sound is on (this shouldn't matter, just the sound)

• no message senders are muted

• have turned off Messages on my laptop (signing out of appleid), and on my iphone, and all 4 combinations of ons and offs (on/on, on/off, off/on, off/off)

• have reset network settings on my phone

• have updated to latest software

• have erased my iPhone and restored from a backup

I'm out of things to try. My laptop receives messages. My iPhone does not.

Anyone have more ideas? Thank you!

It is an iPhone 13 and a 15" MacBook Air M2.

There are a few reasons why you might not be getting notifications on your iPhone. Here are some of the most common causes:

  • Do Not Disturb mode is turned on. Do Not Disturb mode silences all notifications, so make sure it's turned off. You can do this by swiping down from the top of your screen and tapping the crescent moon icon.
  • You're in a Focus mode. Focus modes are like Do Not Disturb mode, but they can be customized to block notifications from specific apps or people. To check if you're in a Focus mode, swipe down from the top of your screen and tap the Focus icon.
  • You've turned off notifications for a specific app. You can turn off notifications for individual apps in the Settings app. To do this, go to Settings > Notifications and scroll down to the app you want to change. Toggle the Allow Notifications switch to the off position.
  • Your iPhone is in Airplane mode. Airplane mode turns off all wireless connections, including cellular data and Wi-Fi. This means that you won't be able to receive notifications if your iPhone is in Airplane mode.
  • Your iPhone is not connected to the internet. If your iPhone is not connected to the internet, you won't be able to receive notifications from apps that need to connect to the internet to send notifications.
  • Your iPhone is not up to date. Sometimes, software updates can fix bugs that can cause notification problems. Make sure your iPhone is up to date by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

If you've checked all of these things and you're still not getting notifications, you can try restarting your iPhone. If that doesn't work, you can contact Apple support for help.

  • My iPhone is not in Airplane mode.
  • My iPhone is not connected to the internet.
  • My iPhone is 100% up to date.
  • Scheduled Summary is off

  • iPhone is not in silent mode.
  • iPhone has restarted. In fact, I erased it and reloaded from a back-up.

Last on the list is this:

Is it happening for 100% of messages? I'm having the exact same issue but it seems to happen for about 20% of my messages. Also, do you have an Apple Watch? I believe this happened when I bought an Apple Watch (but there's also a chance that the issue just became easier to notice once I got the watch). With the Watch it's actually even weirder -- not only is there no vibrate when the message comes in, but there is NOT a notifcation for the message. There's no red dot and if you pull down the notification window there is no text message there. I have to open messages on the watch and I will see the unread text in the app itself. This is different than how my phone behaves: like you (i think) the message DOES show up on the lock screen if I unlock the phone but it just doesn't vibrate or ring or turn the screen on when the message comes in.

The only thing that helps is signing out of messages on my computers. I've been trying to fix this for 10 months now and Apple assured me ios17 would fix the issue -- I just installed it and it did not fix the issue.
