Do not recommend using anti-virus software as it is not needed on a Mac. Most of the anti-virus software will just cause more problems than they solve, plus they impact system performance. These forums are full of people having issues with their Mac due to anti-virus software issues.

To check for malware, then they can use MalwareBytes, but after running the scan there is no need to keep the MalwareBytes' real-time scanner running. This app is the most Mac friendly of this style of app.
