Code Error 4042 - hardware failure? iPad - iPhones

Ive an iPad Pro with a black screen. It is fully charged. I tried restoration in DFU Mode with two different Macs only to get a Code Error 4042.


From readings on this site and other discussion groups off-site this error code, which is not mentioned by Apple resources other than this forum, is basically one of a hardware failure in iOS devices.


Some have installed new batteries, haptic mechanisms, etc. One person had left his iPad charging overnight (as had i) when the black screen occurred. His tech person said that was bad practice and replaced some board in the charging system.


Has anyone else found similar hardware issues that solved the problem?

Apple doesn’t explicitly list error #4042, however, 4000-series errors are often associated with the host computer having difficulties contacting Apple’s servers. Communication difficulties of this nature are often linked with Anti-Virus and/or firewall software running on the host computer.

iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support


While you do so entirely at your own risk, try temporarily disabling your AV/Firewall software - and then repeat your attempt to restore your iPad.


Otherwise, you may need to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom left of this page. Alternatively, if you have access to another Apple device, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to provide assistance:
