Why would my speakers not be working?

When I have my AirPods in, I hear audio from my computer. When I take them out, the computer is no longer out putting audio. The computer is not switching to the internal speakers. When I checked System Preferences under sound, it shows that my MacBook Pro speakers are selected and the Bluetooth settings shows that the computer is not connected to my AirPods or other type speaker.

Any ideas as to why the computer is out putting sound when I have my AirPods, but not through the internal speakers when not connected to any other speaker?

Thanks.

Hi there pasqualerose2,

Let's start by checking the sound settings on your Mac, and working through the steps below to see if they resolve the issue for you. This also includes reaching out to Apple Support directly for further assistance.

First, disconnect any cables from the USB, Thunderbolt, or 3.5mm audio ports on your Mac.
1. From the Apple menu , choose System Settings (or System Preferences).
2. Click Sound.
3. Click the Output tab, then select the built-in speakers. If you don’t see built-in speakers as an option in the Output window, contact Apple Support.
4. If the Output volume slider is set low, move the slider to the right and test again.
5. If the Mute checkbox is selected, deselect it and test again.
6. If you still don’t hear any sound, contact Apple Support.

You'll find this information here: If the internal speakers on your Mac aren't working - Apple Support

Take care.
