Airpods Pro say they are connected to MAC, but no sound comes out

I have been using my AirPods Pro with my MacBook for 2 years. Suddenly, it says it is connected, but the sound output never transitions from the laptop speakers to the Airpods.

I have followed all steps outlined in the community. I ensured that my output is the Airpods in Systems Settings. I have reset my AirPods by forgetting them on all devices and holding the reset button for 15 seconds with the lid open until the light blinks amber, then white. I have restarted my machine multiple times. Nothing is working. I tried to connect with my husband's AirPods - same issue. Please help!

the issue may be with your Mac's Bluetooth or audio settings. First, try resetting your Mac’s Bluetooth by going to System Settings > Bluetooth and turning it off and on. You can also try resetting the Bluetooth module by holding Shift + Option and clicking the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar, then selecting Reset Bluetooth module. Additionally, check Sound Settings > Output to ensure the AirPods are selected as the sound output device.

I've tried both. My magic mouse connects just fine, too. Even when the output says it is AirPods, the sound keeps coming out of the speakers.
