How do I get an updated version of Numbers for a MacBook Pro mid-2014?

I understand that this older computer will not run the latest Numbers 13.1, but will run Numbers Version 11 with its current (and newest available for this model) Big Sur 11.7.7.

The current version of Numbers on the machine is 3.6.2, and I have some files created with an M1 MacBook Air that I need to read and update. Do I need to delete this older version of Numbers and start fresh?

I suppose that Keynote and Pages will work the same.

Hey there Patrickj2198,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

To get started, if there are any updates available for your apps, you should be able to find those in the App Store. For more details, and steps on how to update apps using the App Store, check out this link here: Use the App Store to update apps on Mac - Apple Support

Update from the App Store
* Update from the Updates pane: Click Updates in the sidebar, then do one of the following:
* Update all apps: Click Update All.
* Update individual apps: Click Update beside each app that you want to update.
* Update from the Discover, Create, Work, Play, Develop, and Categories areas: Click the Update button next to an app.

Update from the Apple menu
1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu , then see if you have any updates available.
2. The number of updates appears to the right of App Store in the menu.
3. To get your updates, choose App Store.
4. After App Store opens, click Updates in the sidebar.

If you don't see the update for the Numbers app, then it may be helpful to try removing and reinstalling the app, as reinstalling the app should install the latest update as well: Uninstall apps on your Mac - Apple Support

Keep us updated on what you find.

Take care!

iWork apps are notoriously not backward compatible. I am doubtful that a document created in 13.1 will open in version 11. And one created in 11, then opened & saved in 13.1 on your other Mac, will no longer be readable in 11. Maybe someone here knows for sure but I wouldn't bank on any of this working.

If you need compatibility on an older machine, you may have to use iCloud Numbers. It is always the most recent version and, being web-based, can be used on older Macs. This also means storing your documents in iCloud so they can be accessed.

But you should be able to update your older Mac well past 3.6.2. Usually all you do is go to the App store and an Update will be listed. Before deleting 3.6.2, make sure Numbers is in your Purchased list (click on your user name to see the list). If it is not there, you will not be able to download any version of it. You can download the highest compatible version from your Purchased list, but not from the main store. The main store has only the latest version and it will not let you download that one unless it is compatible with your OS version.
