Airtag causes disconnecting from Airpods (or other bluetooth devices)

So, I know this might sound crazy but I’ve experimented with this.

I recently got an AirTag and used it with a wallet. When my wallet and AirPods are both near each other in my pocket and I try and connect to the AirPods it continuously disconnects and reconnects.

i believe it interferes with it and cause the calls to drop. However, this only happens with the calls. I’ve done ever troubleshoot, from resetting the AirPods to resetting network setting on the phone.

i feel like I’ve found something most haven’t realized yet and this question is more of a fact finding mission to see who else has experienced this. It’s super odd that a device made by Apple would have this conflicting issue.

i tested it by answering a call away from the AirTag and then waving it over my phone while on call and it disconnected. I then disconnected the battery from the AirTag and just like that connection was reestablished.

Hope and update come through to fix it, but until then I’m going to have to keep my wallet and phone in separate pockets or remove the AirTag.

Using an iphone13 pro, with both airpod (1st gen) and beats fit pro.

So, I’ve done a few more tests on the AirPods and I’ve realized it has to do with the Bluetooth on the AirTag. If disconnected and removed from your find my, the connection to the AirPods works again.

i think a software update would fix this issue. I’ve scoured the internet for a fix, nothing yet. If you know of anything please let me know. Till then, I hope someone in the software team sees this.

Hello TheFishermanS,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

We were able to find this information:

Improve your Bluetooth connection

Your headphones communicate using Bluetooth, and a Bluetooth signal can be interfered with or weakened in some situations.
Your headphones might lose their connection more often with streaming audio than with content that is stored on your device.* With your device within a few feet of you, try to listen to music or other audio content that is stored on your device—not streamed—with your headphones. On your iOS or Android device, open the Music app. On a Mac with macOS Catalina, open the Music app. On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes. Then play a song that does not have the Download button Download icon next to it. Or tap the Download button Download icon to download the song.
If your headphones maintain their connection without distortion during this test, then here are a couple of things that can help in other situations:
* Keep your iPhone or other device close to you, so that no obstructions, like walls or floors, are between you and your device.
* If possible, move to a different place—in particular, move away from places with many people or a lot of Wi-Fi activity, poorly shielded cables, microwave ovens, and wireless speakers (or turn off the oven or speaker).

Additional details can be found here: If the sound from your wireless headphones cuts out or is distorted

It may be best to reach out to Apple directly.

They will take a closer look and check on available options.
