What if the Apple Pencil is different generation then the other device

Each of the (currently) two generations Apple Pencils are specific to certain iPad models. Unfortunately, if you have a 2nd gen. iPad Air, neither Apple Pencil would work. You would need, at least, a 3rd gen. iPad Air to use the 1st gen Apple Pencil.
