Magic Mouse 2 (two of them) v.1.9.2 One much slower than the other

I have two Magic Mouse(s) 2 v1.9.2 and one has much slower tracking than the other. The slower one is so slow that it is not at all useful on my dual 27" displays. Moving the slower mouse to track across both screens requires lifting it from the mouse pad to take a second swipe. The faster mouse is able to easily span both monitors using less than a single mouse pad width. Both Magic Mice are configured on the fastest setting in the System Settings> Mouse.

In another Apple Community post a user suggests his office has 5 Macs where they are able to successfully speed their Magic Mice up using Terminal and the command: "defaults write -g com.apple.mouse.scaling n" with n=1-99. When I run this on my Mac Studio (Ventura 13.4.1) I see NO change in mouse tracking speed, regardless of the "n" setting, on either of my Magic Mice.

I have two Magic Mice so that I have a backup when one runs dead. The slower one obviously only gets used for the duration of time the faster one is charging. Sure would be nice if Apple would step up and replace this for me.

One last thought. The slower mouse was originally used on my mom's iPad Pro. Would it be possible that the Magic Mouse 2 has encoded logic for the iPad size display and is still holding onto that logic? If so, how could this be reset?

Check and clean the sensor on the bottom of the slow mouse.

If cleaning doesn't help, take the slow mouse to your local Apple Store and see if they will replace it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I should have stated that the sensors on both mice were cleaned prior to testing and writing this up, as were the rails they glide on.

I only have an Authorized Apple shop in my city and they most certainly won’t back anything out of warranty. I also spoke with an AppleCare representative yesterday, while addressing a different issue, and he didn’t believe anything could be done except replace it. Neither did he agree with my theory of encoding logic for the iPad screen size, provided the mouse was no longer paired to the iPad, and it is not.

I will try to remember to take the mouse with me the next time I go to Omaha, and stop at the Apple Store, but I don’t have high hopes for getting an out-of-warranty replacement.

If no luck, I will pry the mouse apart and learn of its innards. I ordered a Magic Trackpad yesterday to see if I like using one and, if so, that can replace the Magic Mouse 2.

I’m hoping someone that eventually reads this can give us some more insight into the com.apple.mouse.scaling functionality, if for no other reason than to learn something new.
