Content not filling the width of the screen in web browsers

I’ve had this problem for at least 6 months but I haven’t been able to find a solution:

  1. Go to YouTube landing page
  2. Click on a video
  3. Video, recommended videos beneath, and comments all fit the page width (their containers)
  4. After a second, these all shrink in width
  5. Large vertical space on the right hand side (it looks like the code has specified a percentage of screen size for those containers or it has a fixed container size)
  6. My avatar, notification bell and upload button all fit the full width of the page
  7. Pressing Cinema mode on the page corrects the problem, but deselecting brings the problem back.
  8. Doesn’t occur on my iPhone (both 16.5.1)

Other affected pages within past 24 hours:

  1. Amazon
  2. Same as above - landing page is fine
  3. Clicking on a product shrinks the width of the page but only some products, not all
  4. Replicate in all browsers.

Affected browsers:

  1. Safari
  2. Brave (automatically clears all cookies and data)
  3. Firefox (automatically clears all cookies and data).

I spoke to Apple Support and this has now been resolved. All browsers were set to request desktop sites. I’ve no idea why but it was a very simple fix.

Steps: Settings > Safari > Request Desktop Site > Off

Firefox and Brave:

  1. Open browser
  2. Press … or three dashes
  3. Request Desktop Site

Honestly, it’s much quicker to contact support via text message. If they don’t resolve to they’ll escalate and phone you within minutes.

Thanks for your help Michel. Much appreciated.

For iPad models with a Home button, do a simple hard reset/forced restart of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake/power button simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.

OR

For much newer design iPad models, without a Home button, try the new simple hard reset/forced restart procedure for the new 2018-2022 iPad Pros, 2020/21 iPad Air 4 and 5, the 2021 iPad Mini 6 and the new 2022, 10th gen base models,

1. Press and release the volume button closest to the top Power button

2. Then immediately ( and quickly ) press and release the volume button farthest from the top Power button.

3. Then, press and hold the top single sleep/wake/power button You will see the Slide to Power off button, but keep on holding down the power button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.

Once you have performed all the steps, wait for a few seconds and your 2018-2022 iPad will boot up completely to the iPad’s Lock screen.

Tap, read and follow this Apple support link below.
