sidebar on left

How do I get rid of the annoying left sidebar on my big Mac...if I don't know if I'm using Safari or not?

Sounds like you're in Full Screen mode.

Move your cursor to the top left hand corner of the screen, the window controls will drop down. The circled icon is the one you need:

Also the keyboard command

Shift-command-L

Will toggle the bar.
