Compatibility of M1 Mac Mini running Ventura with Nokia Fastmile 5G modem / router

I recently got a Nokia Fastmile 5G 3.2 modem/router and it works perfectly with every device that I have including Intel based Macbook pro running Big Sur. But my M1 MacMini is having trouble working with the Nokia.

The symptoms are: it can connect to the Nokia with DHCP and the assigned ip address 192.168.1.171 and router address of 192.168.1.1 appear to be quite normal but I cannot access any websites, it spins a little and then the browser comes back with 'cannot reach the site/webpage' and later may show 'there is no internet'.

However, if I turn DHCP 'off' on the TCP/IP page of the wifi service in Systems settings on the Mac, then I can get to webpages. Note that I did not turn DHCP 'off' on the Nokia router. On inspection of the TCP/IP setting shows an ip address of 192.0.0.2 and a router address of 192.0.0.1

While I can find webpages in this setting, I cannot find the router which is suppose to be 192.168.1.1

The problem is similar if I connect the Nokia to the Lan port on the MacMini.

Wonder anybody has a similar problem and possible solution?

Mac mini, macOS 13.4

What does it show for DNS servers on the Mac?

If it shows the router, try adding a public DNS server address. https://www.lifewire.com/free-and-public-dns-servers-2626062

If it shows something else besides the router, remove them.

Barney, thankyou very much. It worked.

The DNS server on the Mac Mini is 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 and after deleting them, I am able to get to webpages and also get to the Nokia router UI using 192.161.1

After I removed the above DNS, it is now showing greyed out DNS of 192.168.1.1 (router IPv4 address?) and fe80:2a74:f5ff:fe15:6a04 (presumably the router address in IPv6?)

Are you able explain the cause and solution to the problem, thanks.

Those are both valid primary servers for two different providers. I would try a matched pair from a single provider. But, as I stated, I’m only guessing.

You may be able to use DHCP with manual address and put the public DHCP servers back in. Use an address with the same three octets as you have and change the last. Some routers can be configured to limit automatic addresses to a range, Ang you would put your manual outside that (below 255) to prevent duplication.

I don’t know why it is slow if it is not on other devices. I don’t notice any delays when I use my M2 MacBook Pro with my iPhone hotspot.

Hi Barney, thanks. So are you saying that by deleting DNS servers 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8, it goes to the default DNS server of the service providers? If that is the case then it would mean 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 are not valid which is on the list of free public dns servers.

Also you said 'try using a pair from the providers', are you saying adding those DNS servers addresses in the Mac Mini where it was deleted?

The other things that I observed is that when doing a google search or put in a website name in the address bar of the browser, it take quite a bit longer (latency) to get to a webpage as if it is somehow searching. It is not the case on my Intel based Macbook pro.
