It's been a while since I did this with my home video DVDs, but the basic idea is to

  1. Insert the home video DVD, so that it shows up as a mounted volume.
  2. Go into Disk Utility.
  3. Create a disk image file on one of your SSDs or HDDs from the contents of the home video DVD. I believe that you want to use File > New Image > Image from [your DVD's name], and a Format of "DVD/CD master". You'll need enough space to store the image (which might require multiple gigabytes).
  4. Quit Disk Utility.
  5. Go to the Finder. Then, "To burn a disc image (.dmg file) to a disc, Control-click the disc image file, choose “Burn Disc Image [disc name] to Disc” from the shortcut menu, then follow the instructions."
  6. Repeat Step 5 as many times as you like.
  7. Keep the .dmg file (if you think you might want to burn more DVDs, or to play the video from your SSD/HDD). Or move it to the Trash and empty the Trash to reclaim the storage space.
