Opening jpeg photos on Iphone8 when connected to Windows 11 PC

Up until about 2 months ago I could plug my iPhone into my Windows 11 PC and view photos with the Photos app on the PC, but recently I get the message: "Sorry, Photos can't open this file because the format is currently unsupported, or the file is corrupted"

I can copy and paste the iPhone photos to the PC and open them without any issue. Have tried repairing and resetting the windows app but no change. My iPhone is set to take pictures in "most compatible" mode.

Any suggestions or help??

Neil22R - Thanks for your kind reply. I have chosen not to utilize iCloud as I'm adverse to paying for storage that I don't really need! The thing is - I've always been able to access photos on my iphone as a "usb" drive and look at them and delete bad pictures as I see fit - which is easier to do on a PC rather than on the phone.

Anyway - I'll keep pounding sand until someone has another idea - can't believe I'm the only one in the universe who suffers from this anomaly!
