iMessage is turned off on my device and won’t turn back on

I was able to text one moment then the next I received green messages from my friend. I thought it was on her end until I tried to text my other friends and my messages were all green. They didn’t come up with a red explanation point. I went in setting in messages and saw my messages were turned off and when I tried to turn them back on it’d say “an error occurred during activation pls try again.” I turned my phone off completely, I’ve changed my Apple ID password, I’ve made sure my Apple ID matched the one in my messages. I checked to make sure my phone number was still in my phone app. I’m not logged out of my messages. When I’m in a chat it says “ an error occurred in ur account (k.bratten) email is signed out of iMessages.” I’m just confused as to why this randomly happened when I still have service? When I turn my wifi off I can still watch videos, snap, play service games, just not text.

Hi kalynb135,

Below are some additional step you can take to get this iMessages issue resolved:

"When activating iMessage or FaceTime, you might see one of these messages:

  • Waiting for activation
  • Activation unsuccessful
  • An error occurred during activation
  • Could not sign in, please check your network connection
  • Unable to contact the iMessage server. Try again.

Check your device settings

  1. Make sure that you’re connected to a cellular data or Wi-Fi network.
  2. If you're using an iPhone, you need SMS messaging to activate your phone number with iMessage and FaceTime. Depending on your carrier, you might be charged for this SMS.
  3. Go to Settings > General > Date & Time and make sure that your time zone is set correctly.

Turn off and restart iMessage and FaceTime

  1. Go to Settings > Messages and turn off iMessage.
  2. Go to Settings > FaceTime and turn off FaceTime.
  3. Restart your device:
  1. Turn iMessage and FaceTime back on.

Still not activated after a day?

It might take up to 24 hours to activate iMessage and FaceTime. If the issue continues after 24 hours, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that your device has the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
  2. If you're using an iPhone, contact your carrier to make sure that you can send and receive SMS messages.
  3. Make sure you can send and receive SMS. If a prompt appears stating "Your carrier may charge for SMS messages used to activate FaceTime and iMessage", tap "OK" to allow possible SMS charges.
  4. Contact Apple Support.

You can also use your email address with iMessage and FaceTime. Sign in to your Apple ID account page and review all the email addresses you have on file, including the one that you're trying to verify. If the email address is incorrect, you can update it. Then click Resend next to the email address that you want to verify."
