Why is there a progress bar below the Apple logo when starting up sometimes?

I am just curious, because recently when my Mac starts up without an update, every time there will be a progress bar below the Apple logo on the black screen (the one before it shows the login page). It didn't use to have this and just had an Apple logo. Why did it start showing up now?
