I can't take a screenshot on my MacBook Pro

If you're really running Ventura 13.0—the footer here shows macOS 12.6—update to macOS 13.4.1(c), and try again.

The first of the chords is the whole screen screenshot. To invoke that, use Command and hold and Shift and hold and then tap 3 and release all, or Shift and hold and Command and hold and tap 3 and release all. For most chords, press and hold the modifier (shift, command, option, control) keys first. Then tap the character key to add it to the chord. Then release all the keys. I don't ever try to press all three or five or however many keys the chord has simultaneously.

Command-Shift-5 is the new general purpose screen capture command.

Are you using Macbook Pro keyboard, or an external keyboard?

Do you have any 3rd party keyboard enhancement software installed? Keyboard Maestro, BetterTouchTool, Karabiner, etc...

Does it work if you boot into Safe mode?

View your keyboard shortcuts.

Are those all enabled, and do you see thst chord being used by some other shortcut in that or some other section of the configured shortcuts?

Not sure if you just typed the wrong thing in your question or if this is the cause of the problem -- it's Shift, Command, and 3 not shift/control/3.

Do you have Dropbox installed? If so, there is a setting in Dropbox that allows it to "steal" screen shots. It's under Dropbox > Preferences > Backups.

I just found out what "CloudApp" is. It's a third-party screen shot app you installed that is interfering with the normal screen shot operation of macOS. Uninstall it.

Just to add, after pressing command shift 5, make sure Options is set to Desktop.

Something is very wrong. Do this, double-click on the Screenshot app in Applications/Utilities, then set the Option accordingly.

Btw, are you on a U.S. keyboard and Input Source?

Just to be sure, I'm going to ask a "Stupid Question". Did you do anything like change the keyboard modifiers via System Settings to swap Command and Control, or Command and Option so that it works more like Windows?

Yeah; read your reply after posting mine.

Usual messes with weird behaviors are with add-on security and add-on VPN apps and add-on cleaners, so this is a little different from the usual app messes.

Camping on the actual Apple screenshot chords is not helpful.

Have you reviewed the app shortcuts in settings, as mentioned above?

I’m starting to lean toward re-installing this Mac, if there are other similar add-ons around, add-on snti-malware or add-on cleaners or such. or if this Mac was adopted from somebody else without re-installing macOS.

If all you did was delete CloudApp from the Applications folder, it probably has other files installed that are interfering. You need to contact the developer and ask how delete it completely.
