Trying to take a screen shot on my MacBook Pro running Ventura 13.0. All "how-to's" say to press shift/control/3 at the same time. When I do that, absolutely nothing happens. Is there an "on" switch for this function I'm not aware of?

If you're really running Ventura 13.0—the footer here shows macOS 12.6—update to macOS 13.4.1(c), and try again.
The first of the chords is the whole screen screenshot. To invoke that, use Command and hold and Shift and hold and then tap 3 and release all, or Shift and hold and Command and hold and tap 3 and release all. For most chords, press and hold the modifier (shift, command, option, control) keys first. Then tap the character key to add it to the chord. Then release all the keys. I don't ever try to press all three or five or however many keys the chord has simultaneously.
No to your questions, Bob. All very vanilla - using the MacBook keyboard, with no 3rd party enhancements. I may try rebooting in safe mode, but I am a very vanilla user, and this sort of thing makes me nervous.

Hello to MrHoffman and dialabrain - I had no idea I had a screen shot app installed. I deleted it from my Applications list in Finder (it was still called CloudApp). The Screenshot utility is still there and still enables a screenshot (although the utility dialog box is inevitably in the picture). But I still can't get shift/command/3 or /4 to generate a screen shot.
Mr. Hoffman - None of the shortcuts in Settings/Keyboard etc were activated. Doing so seems to have solved the problem completely, so thank you for your advice. I wish I had known about this long ago, it would have saved some headache.
Yes, sorry that was my typo. I pressed shift, command, 3. Also all combinations I could think of among shift, control, option, command and either 3 or 4. Zilch.
I can tell you're reaching, which is both encouraging and not. I haven't made any changes to the native settings. Not sure even how I would. The answer lies elsewhere...
Mr. Hoffman - I have upgraded to Ventura 13.4.1. Still no screenshot capture.
When I press command/shift/5 I get an invitation to log into CloudApp. Still no screen shots.
A gallon of Cherry Garcia to whoever solves this conundrum.

Glad you found the solution. FWIW, Mr Hoffman did tell you to check the shortcuts yesterday.
