My husband and I have our own Apple IDs.
My iPad Mini is too old to use iPadOS16 for Shared Library. If my husband moves to iCloud Photos to automatically sync his devices through iCloud, can he still sync using USB cable to my old iPad?
Or must I use Shared Library and upgrade my iPad Mini?

He will still be able to sync selected albums to your iPad, as long as iCloud Photos hs not been enabled on the iPad. But the photos and videos he wants to sync have to be downloaded from iCloud. If he enables iCloud Photos with the option "Optimize Mac Storage" some items may not be stored on your Mac in a full resolution, only optimized to save storage. He would have view the photos he wants to sync you your iPad enlarged to see them at a full resolution and force a download from iCloud or refrain from using "optimize Mac Storage" for the photos. That will make it easier to backup the Photos Library anyway. Time Machine can only back up the originals that have been downlaoded from iCloud.

Thank you Leonie. He will not enable Optimise Mac Storage so that the originals remain on the Mac and so they are backed up, and I don’t use iCloud Photos myself, so I think we are in business?
Can I still sync using USB to my iPad from my husband's Macbook Air if he moved to fully iCloud Photos?
