Not connected to wi-fi

Trying to set up a previously used watch (series 4) to a different phone. Watch has been reset to factory settings. I’ve tried syncing to and iPhone 8 and iPhone 13. It shows that the watch needs a software update. After an hour of downloading the update it shows that it cannot complete because it is not connected to wifi. The phones that I have tried have been connected to wifi. Have tried multiple times with each phone. Is there something wrong with the watch?

iPhone 6, iOS 12

The WiFi connection required is for the iPhone doing the setup. Until it is fully configured and setup has completed the Apple Watch would not know the password for your WiFi, so you know the problem is not in the watch.

I suggest you check your iPhone is fully updated for software, and has a good connection to a regular WiFi with good download speed (home or workplace are usually reliable). You will almost certainly have problems if you are trying to use a cellular Hotspot WiFi, or one of those horrible systems with a web landing and authentication page which are loved by places like hotels and public WiFi like coffee shops. They often time out, disconnect at random, and may have serious speed restrictions.
