WHY Mac Mini makes document duplicates of SD card photos?

Every time I plug in an SD card or USB storage drive, bring up photos of my artwork (or any photo) the Mac Mini / Ventura OS automatically makes a black document copy (or whatever it is) right next to the photo I opened. This does not happen when photos are already on the Mac Mini storage. How do I stop it from doing this? My old 2015 Macbook Pro never did this.

Mac mini, macOS 13.4

I recommend copying all photos off the SD card first to a folder on the Mac you will use to manage the photos by date.

Open the Photos App.

Open Photos menu -> Preferences

Make sure Copy items to photo library is unchecked.

Future imports will be in place, and will not duplicate unless you choose the duplicate photo option in Photos.
