Apple Safari differences between iOS and iPadOS or macOS when displaying streaming video with codec H.264 or H.265

Hello all,

I have a problem with Apple Safari on iOS.

On an iPad I can display a streaming video with codec H.264 or codec H.265 in Apple Safari without any problems.

On a Mac this streaming video with codec H.264 or H.265 also runs without any problems in Apple Safari.

But on an iPhone with iOS-version 16.5.1 (c) this is not possible with Apple Safari.

The streaming video is not shown on the iPhone. I only get a "dark screen".

I get the same result with Firefox or Chrome on iOS because the underlying web engine is the same on iOS for all browsers.

How can I stream a video with codec H.264 or H.265 in Apple Safari on an iOS-device?

I use a iPhone (SE 2 with iOS 16.5.1 (c)).

Also some other settings are probably different in Apple Safari between the iOS version and the macOS- or iPadOS-version when displaying streaming content with H.264 or H.265?

Thank you.

Hello lowlevelmission,

We have a great support article that might help with Safari not playing content on certain webpages for you. Please take a look at it here: If Safari isn't loading websites or quits on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support. Follow this guidance:

"Connect to a different network

Try to load a website, like www.apple.com, using cellular data. If you don't have cellular data, connect to a different Wi-Fi network and then load the website.

If you're using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), check your VPN settings. If you have a VPN turned on, some apps or websites might block content from loading.

Restart your device

Turn off your device and turn it on again.

Clear website data

You can clear website data occasionally to improve Safari performance.

      1. Go to Settings > Safari.
      2. Tap Clear History and Website Data.
      3. Tap Clear History and Data to confirm.

Turn on JavaScript

Turn on JavaScript if it's not already on.

      1. Go to Settings > Safari > Advanced.
      2. Find the JavaScript feature.
      3. Tap the button to turn on JavaScript.

Get more help

If the issue continues and only affects a certain website or webpage, check if you have Private Relay turned on. You can temporarily turn off Private Relay in iCloud Settings. If Safari still doesn't load websites and you tried all of these steps, contact the website developer for more help."

We hope this helps. Let us know if we can assist with anything else at all. Take care.
