Apple, why is my iPad Pro 2018 not showing full screen on my external monitor like it used to?

I have a 2018 iPad Pro with a HyperDrive dock. I used to be able to plug this into my television and watch downloaded content in full screen. It seems I can no longer do this.

I demand to know why? I spent a lot of money on these devices and if you have deliberately crippled them with software updates that reduce the functionality I want my money back.

Please explain.

The Apple Support Community is a user-to-user technical forum. Other than the site Moderators, Apple neither monitor nor participate within the Community. Contributors here are all end-users, just like you.

As such, Apple will neither see nor respond to your demand for answers. As for deliberate crippling, this doesn’t happen. Bugs, however, can and do occur. With available information, it is impossible to offer a definitive explanation for what you may or may not being seeing with your iPad and its operation with your external monitor.

Due to limitations of internal hardware, the new Stage Manager feature introduced with iPadOS 16.1 is only available for these models of iPad:

  • iPad Air (5th generation)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (all generations)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)

iPad models supporting Stage Manager have an M2, M1 or A12X CPU (upon which the M-series CPUs are reportedly based) - with at least 8GB RAM.

Not sure which iPad model you have?

Settings > General > About > Model Name

Assuming that your iPad does support Stage Manager, your monitor’s screen resolution will impact the available settings and external monitors available capabilities.

While undocumented, testing has demonstrated that 4:3 monitors with a display resolution of 1280x1024 and below are currently only usable with iPad screen mirroring; as such, associated settings to disable screen mirroring in favour of Stage Manager are not available in iPad Display settings.

When used with a 16:9 widescreen monitor, with a native display resolution of 1920x1080 or greater, the full set of Display settings - and access to Stage Manager - should become available.

The iPad User Guide lists the upper resolution limit as 6K - but the Guide offers no lower limit, or suggestion of aspect-ratio, being a factor for compatibility:

In conclusion, your monitor must be capable of 16:9 widescreen 1920x1080 (FHD) to support iPadOS16 Stage Manager extended desktop. Unless the monitor meets the minimum required specifications, you will not see the full range of controls in iPad settings.

When mirroring your iPad display to an external monitor, expect to see black bars to infill where the iPad screen doesn’t match the aspect ratio of monitor screen.

Whether or not this is an intentional limitation, or an unresolved bug is unknown.
