Recognizing a CD/DVD drive

Like many here (to whom I seem to be prevented from replying) I used to get my MacBook Air to recognize my non-Apple CD/DVD hard drive (a UHNDY). But I can no longer do it.

I can find the CD Drive app nestled in a separate applications folder in "System" but I can't click it to life.

I think it may be because I recently updated to running Mac OS Big Sur 11.7.8.

I would like a solution that did not involve buying the very expensive Apple SuperDrive, and I hope Apple has not made that impossible.

I clicked that Apple Support link, but nothing I read there explained why my computer does not automatically bring up my UHNDY CD/DVD drive or show the icon of the disc inserted when I insert a disc--as it did before.

My computer does not ask me "to allow an accessory to connect", either. It simply does not react at all when I connect this accessory.

It occurs to me that Apple may be making all third-party CD/DVD drives unmountable so that only an Apple "Superdrive" will mount. Possible?

Thank you for trying to answer my question.

P. Phillips asked:

How exactly is the CD/DVD Drive attached to the computer ?

And said he had:

An "M2 Apple MBA computer which as USB-C Ports"

And that his:

"LaCie CD / DVD Reader has a male USB-A Male port"

So that he has:

"to use a USB-C to USB-A adapter to make if work"

My computer is a MacBook Air recently updated to running Mac OS Big Sur 11.7.8

My CD/DVD hard drive drive, which had always worked before, is non-Apple UHNDY.

The UHNDY CD/DVD hard drive's USBC socket is connected with a USB 3 plug to a USB 3.0 10-port hub

The USB 3.0 10-port hub is connected to a LyfnLove USB 3.0 7-port hub

and the LyfnLove USB 3.0 7-port hub is plugged directly into the MacBook Air.

All other ports are reporting connections to my little network.

That worked perfectly before the update to OS11.7.8. The above details remain the same but now the UHNDY disc is not recognized.

I conclude that I still do not have a solution.
