MacBook Air won't recognize external Apple CD drive

I just upgraded to a MacBook Air (Aug 23) and it is not recognizing my Apple CD drive. A CD will not insert into the drive, it pops back out.

I have it attached to a USB-USC adaptor, and other items plugged into it are working.

I have tried: switching to a different port, changing which USC device goes in which port on the computer.

First, I'm assuming by "Apple CD drive," you are referring to the Apple SuperDrive ... correct? If so, according to Apple, it is only compatible with the following MacBook Air models:

  • MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015 - 2017)
  • MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015)

After discussion with AppleCare I confirmed that the Superdrive DOES work with the latest model of MacBook Air. However the drive was not recognized until the Mac was restarted in Safe Mode to reset the SMC. It's now working fine. [Interestingly, this problem did not occur with my wife's (slightly older) MacBook Air; it was recognized the first time it was plugged in.]
