I am getting many Mail alerts on my iPhone 12 Pro Max for addresses which are not set as VIP. Many of them are spam emails and they are setting off the VIP alert. It is very frustrating as I just want to get an alert for important work-related emails but am getting bombarded daily with VIP alerts from addresses which are definitely not marked as VIP.

You may have set the same Alert for New Mail and VIP Alerts, see the pic below which is self-explanatory

New mail was indeed set to alert. Have now changed to 'None' so hopefully this solves the problem.
