Is it necessary or advisable to eject portable SSDs before updating the macOS? I have several portable SSDs that I access every day, so I generally leave them all connected every day. Today, after updating macOS I discovered that all three SSDs had been disconnected improperly.

Yes, everything appears to be intact so far. Just to be safe, I think I will try to remember to properly eject all portable SSDs prior to the next update.
I didn't know that they would reconnect automatically after the restart. Maybe I should have waited longer. After I saw that they were disconnected, I shut the Mac down, physically disconnected the drives, restarted the Mac, and then reconnected the drives. They've all been behaving themselves since then.
I've never disconnected drives or anything else during updates, upgrades, betas, lightning or wind storms.
However, doesn't you can't. Better safe than sorry as they say. 😎
When you restart after an update, that effectively disconnects them to be reconnected a few moments later.

I have never disconnected my drives prior to any update. Even though you got this message is all still intact? If so do not worry.
