Always On Display goes BLACK when the lights are off in my room

I have an iPhone 14 Pro, IOS 16.5.1.

I want to use the phone with the Always On Display as my bedside clock when I go to bed.

Unfortunately, about 1 minute after turning off the lights in my room, the display dims and 1 minute later, goes black. If I have the light on the side table next to the iPhone turned on, the display remains on.

  • Always On Display setting is ON.
  • Night Shift is OFF.
  • Focus modes are OFF.
  • I initially had a Do Not Disturb schedule enabled. (FYI - the schedule was set to start at 11:00 but the behavior started prior to that at 10:30).

> I turned the Dim Lock Screen Option to OFF and restarted the phone. That did not resolve the issue.

> I have now completely turned Do Not Disturb to OFF and restarted the phone. This did not resolve the issue.

What am I missing?

thks

Hello kwbost,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. We see you're having trouble with Always-On display. We have a few steps and an article that may help. Let's try the steps below.

Use Always-On display with your iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max - Apple Support

"Always-On display goes dark when you don't need it

To save battery life, the display is completely dark when:

  • Your iPhone is lying face down
  • Your iPhone is in your pocket or bag
  • Sleep Focus is on
  • Low Power Mode is on
  • Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
  • You're using Continuity Camera
  • You haven't used your iPhone for a while (your iPhone learns your activity patterns and turns the display off and on accordingly, including if you set up an alarm or sleep schedule)
  • Your iPhone detects that you moved away from it with a paired Apple Watch (Always-On display will turn on when your Apple Watch is close to your iPhone again)"

Check to ensure the settings above aren't coming into play when trying to keep your display on.

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
