Always on Display stopped working when I shot the lights off

So prior to this latest update, my always on display would be on until focus mode triggered do not disturb, now since this past update, if I'm watching tv with the light off regardless of the time of day, the screen turns off, no always on display showing, If I turn the light on and touch the iphone screen, always on display stays on. Turn off the light, it immediately begins to dim the screen and shuts off within a 10 seconds or so.

I didn't change anything so I don't know what's going on or what this update did, always on is pretty important to me as I'm always looking at the notifications and time.

I've checked the always on display settings, turned them off and on, I rebooted, and focus isn't on, not sure what else to check.

No, as I said "I" didn't change anything, I updated my phone, it used to dim slightly but always on display stayed on until do not disturb kicked in at 10pm for me. Now regardless of time if the room darkens the screen completely goes black within a few seconds, that never was the case. It's on a stand, charging and facing me while I type this and the screen is off. Not sure what the update did but it broke always on for me in way I used it.

Only thing I did do today besides update, was replace the glass screen protector but it's clear glass, I can't imagine that's the reason.

Update, removed the screen protector, that wasn't it
