I have many photos in an album that I need to reorganize. I can only drag the selected photos to the top/bottom of the visible screen. Then, I have to drop them; scroll up/down the screen; click on the selection again, and drag them to the edge again, etc, etc. How can I move a group of photos anywhere in the album?

On a MacBook, you can use the trackpad by selecting a picture, hold the thumb down to keep it selected, maybe drag it a bit, and then simultaneously use the index and middle fingers on the trackpad to scroll the screen. I've done this more times than I can count. It usually works well-- frankly I hadn't noticed that the scroll-while-dragging thing had been fixed! I sure am glad!
That problem has been fixed in Ventura. The latest Monterey version is 12.6.7. If you're not running that you should update to it to see if that bug was fixed in the update. Otherwise, you'll need to upgrade to Ventura if you MacBook allows.
When I want to change the date of a list of photos, so the date reflects the chronological sequence of the scanned photos, I am using this Apple Script: Script: Batch Change the Date and Time to a Fixed Date

In order to organize your photos on your Mac follow these steps:
"Create a new album
You can also create Smart Albums that automatically update based on criteria that you choose. For example, you can create a Smart Album filled with photos taken in the last 30 days. Choose File > New Smart Album, enter an album name, and then choose the conditions that you want to use.
Add photos to an existing album
You can also select a photo you’d like to add to an album, Control-click the photo, then choose Add to > [Album Name]." Organize and find your photos on your Mac

Thanks. I know this. My problem concerns dragging photos in an album with 400 photos to a place outside the visible screen. I have digitized many old photos that have the scan date, not the original date, connected to them. So, they are scattered throughout the photos library. I have placed all 400 photos for 1982, for example, in an album. Now, I want to organize these 400 photos chronologically in that album, but I can only drag and place photos within the visible screen on the mac book.
Thank you. Unfortunately, my MacBook is early 2015. My updated software is Monterey, Version 12.6.8. I apparently cannot add the Ventura software. I am wondering if a new machine is needed. I heard from someone yesterday that my need to change the image date and time for batches of photos doesn't work in Ventura either.
Thanks so much for your input on this. So, for Ventura, may I ask further? In my example, I have 400 scanned photos in a "1982" album in Photos (life photos from 1982); they have varied dates and times, depending upon when they were scanned, etc. I would like to put them in chronological order from January 1, 1982 and have their dates reflect the chronological order (in my Library). I would like Photos to "re-date" them in the order I have placed them in the album. I currently have to date each one individually or in batches (using the image date and time) since the Image date and time function reflects the date that is on the photo... Hope that is understandable. Thanks for any insights. I've contacted Apple Support, but I don't think Apple supports what I want.
Thank you. I will try by starting with those that are of the same date, order them, and then run the script. My problem is that so many of these imported photos have different dates connected to them...but collecting and ordering those with the same date FIRST may eliminate some of the manual work. Thank you.
Another problem I have is the inability to drag photos and relocate photos outside the visible screen on the computer. To reorganize photos within an album, I can only move photos to a location within the visible screen...I think I used to be able to drag the selected photos to the top of the screen and it would open up, allowing me to move photos almost anywhere, for example to the very front of an album of 200 photos. I don't seem to be able to do that any longer.

I don't know why you're getting an extra 30 seconds but it might be the videos you have in the slideshow.
A workaround that I do is to create the slideshow to the time desired without music and export. Then add the video to a slideshow app like PhotoStage Slideshow Producer, GarageBand or Photo Slideshow-DVD Slideshow and add the music to it there. PhotoStage lists you overlap audio tracks fading from one into the other, etc.
Adjusting date and time work just fine in Ventura.
