"Can't download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X"

I am trying to reinstall the original OS on my mid 2011 27" iMac. it ends up at this promo "Can't download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X" over and over. I have read all the replies here and see that the only one with kudos was the one suggesting to use a different wifi connection. Id like to know how to pull that off.

You missed the shift key.

Option-Command-shift-R does internet recovery.

The mid-2011 iMac shipped with 10.7.0.

internet recovery will install 10.7.5 as long sa you use Disk Utility to reformat it HFS Extended GUID.

The additional components may fail to install because of certificates being outdated. Use these directions to change the system time before attempting installation:

After the installation of Lion, you can upgrade directly to High Sierra:

That may not be possible.

Better yet is to connect your Mac via ethernet.

On the back of your Mac is a port that looks like a wide phone jack. This is an ethernet port. Connecting it directly to your modem will ensure connectivity during recovery.

You may also have to reset the time with the terminal as the OSes on recovery frequently have expired certificates that only work when the Mac's date and time is set back in time.

I'm not sure it had Install Discs, but certainly try that if you have the DVD..

Start up from macOS Recovery

Option-⌘-R

Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.

APFS won't work for Sierra, Sierra needs MacOS Extended Journaled. High Sierra won't work for APFS on earlier Macs.

What has often worked for others is to use this Restore Method instead of CMD+r keys...

Option-⌘-R

Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.

No.

There never was an installer that could be used on mid-2011 iMacs later to install Mac OS that shipped from Apple on DVD. The recovery require a working an ethernet connection or a good strong secure WiFi, if you can ensure you are entering the WiFi password in the right place.

The High Sierra installer on eBay hopefully is just a raw installation created with a package software that creates your own discs and flash media and doesn't include any of their own custom instaled software on the installer, and hopefully they kept it in good shape. Generally I keep clones of my olde tr operating systems to restore from external hard drives. That's the only way I can guarantee that I have an older system available to me.

You may want to bring the iMac and its power cord to an authorized service centre and see if you can run recovery there. http://www.apple.com/buy

If it works there, and not from home, someone needs to reconfigure your router so it doesn't block Apple's installers.

Ok / since having erased the drive believing (from Apple) that I COULD access online recovery and rebuild the OS // please // since the online recovery system is not working, tell me this.. >>>> can I use my/ a old CD/DVD install discs to rebuild the system? I believe the compatibility starts with Lion. If so // which install CD/DVDs are compatible. Anyone? THANK YOU!

Ive already tried Option-⌘-R. For some reason the option link access was not live .. very frustrating.

I have a several install DVDs none were compatible. So Ive put in a question to an eBay OS X thumb drive seller.

Id like to know what OS X the mid 2011 iMacs shipped with. 10.7.5 is the oldest that work on it so I'd prefer the

actual original OS X it shipped with.

I did miss the shift key. But still no go. Still prompts with "Can't download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X". There is a link in the prompt window that says "customize" in the bottom left but it was inactive.

The time change scenario has not yet worked for anyone on the community.

Ive ordered a bootable High Sierra installer from an eBay seller in the UK.
